Chris Sutton believes Manchester United have blundered by signing goalkeeper Andre Onana and would have been far better off sticking with David de Gea.

Speaking on Mail Sport’s It’s All Kicking Off podcast, Sutton claimed £43million summer arrival Onana is putting pressure on the entire United team after making a string of high-profile errors.

The Cameroon International was at fault again on Saturday when he allowed Mathias Jensen’s strike past him as Brentford took the lead at Old Trafford.

Sutton fears Ten Hag can’t drop Onana because United’s back-up keeper, the summer arrival Altay Bayindir, is a complete unknown.

‘In truth, I had to look his name up,’ admitted Sutton on Monday’s show.

‘We have had this great debate about Arsenal having two excellent goalkeepers. I think Onana is OK with his feet but you have eventually got to use your hands and I don’t think he’s good enough.

‘When you watch Match of the Day, people like to strip goals back and say ‘there was a mistake in midfield, a misplaced pass, [Victor] Lindelof could have done better…’

‘The bottom line is, over the years, Manchester United have had great goalkeeper – Peter Schmeichel, even David de Gea.

‘De Gea was a far better goalkeeper than Onana but if Onana just does his job – and it wasn’t a difficult save to make – then there’s not an issue.

‘I think he is bringing increased pressure on the whole team and the truth is he is not good enough for Manchester United and they have made a major rick [mistake] getting him in.’

Mail Sport’s football editor Ian Ladyman referenced Schmeichel’s comments after Saturday’s game about Onana feeling the pressure at Old Trafford.

‘I think a lot of that [Onana’s mistakes] is pressure,’ said Schmeichel. ‘I spoke to him after Bayern. I spoke to him after Galatasaray as well and he was very down on the mistakes he made.

‘I’m trying to speak to him about what it’s like being at Manchester United and why whatever [mistakes] you’ve made, you have to put it in a box and put it to the side. If you make a mistake in the game, it might be a mistake we can see, it might be a mistake that we don’t see.

‘But you wait to think about it and analyse it after the game or at night or whatever. You have to be there for the next moment. If you’re not, you’ll make the next mistake. 

‘And now he’s upset the whole team. They will now not trust him even more, and my god, it’s not good.’
