Ralf Rangnick described Liverpool‘s mauling of Manchester United at Anfield as ’embarrassing’ and ‘humiliating’ before confirming a summer rebuild could see as many as 10 new faces this summer.

United were well below the level of title-chasing Liverpool on Tuesday night and produced a display to that effect as Mohamed Salah bagged a brace to add to strikes from Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane.

Having lost 5-0 in the reverse at Old Trafford, United has lost the season head-to-head 9-0 on aggregate and Rangnick feels Jurgen Klopp‘s side are six years ahead of where United find themselves slumped right now.

‘It is embarrassing, it is disappointing, maybe even humiliating,’ interim boss Rangnick told BBC Match of the Day.

‘We have to accept they are six years ahead of us now.

‘When Jurgen Klopp came they changed at the club and lifted not just the team but the club and city to a new level. That is what needs to happen with us in the next transfer windows.’

Diaz had the enviable task of a tap in inside five minutes before Salah got his first to make it 2-0 after 22 minutes.

‘I don’t think a different formation at the start would have changed anything,’ Rangnick continued.

‘The first goal we conceded, it was not part of the game plan to be that high up and concede a counter-attack after five minutes. That changed the game.

‘The first half, we were just not good enough. We did not win any first ball or second balls. We were second best in all relevant areas.’

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is closing in on signing a four-year deal to take over Manchester United in the summer but he has his work cut out.

Paul Pogba, who went off early in the first half, sees his contract expire in the summer and Rangnick, who will adopt a consultancy role with the club at the end of the season, confirmed that a major rebuild is going to take place to fix this group.

‘There will be a rebuild here,’ he told reporters in his post-match press conference.

‘Six, seven, maybe 10 new players will come’

More to follow.
