Moldova international Violeta Mitul has died at the age of 26 in a tragic accident.

UEFA announced that Mitul passed away earlier this week following an accident while she was on a mountain hike with team-mates from her club Einherji.

The left-back died after an accidental fall from a cliff in the harbour area near Vopnafjordur.

Prior to joining Einherji earlier this year, Mitul had played for clubs including FF La Solana, Apulia Trani and WFC Voskhod.

Mitul was on a mountain hike with team-mates from club Einherji when the accident occurred

The Moldovan FA said that Mitul was ‘one of the best players of the women’s national team’

Earlier in her career, Mitul won the Moldovan and Romanian Cups with Alga Tiraspol and Vasas Femina.

In a statement from Einherji, Mitul was described as ‘kind, energetic and an exemplary footballer’.
