Mac McClung, the three-time NBA slam dunk contest champion, has agreed to join a Spanish club owned by former NBA All-Star Marc Gasol, his mother confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.
The 27-year-old guard signed with Basquet Girona, a team in Liga ACB, Spain’s top professional basketball division. McClung had previously told ESPN he rejected several significant overseas offers while continuing to pursue the full-time NBA opportunity that has remained just out of reach.

Lenoir McClung told ESPN that her son is no longer eligible for the two-way contracts that had allowed him to move between the NBA and the G League. She said McClung and his agent held conversations with NBA teams about the upcoming season, but those teams were not prepared to make a commitment.
“It’s just the right timing,” Lenoir McClung said. “[Basquet Girona] wants [Mac] to be their franchise player. It means a lot. … He really is looking forward to doing this. … He feels at peace. And he feels like he’s ready for a new chapter.”
McClung’s mother said Gasol, the 2013 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, played “a huge impact” in her son’s decision to join the club, which is based roughly an hour from Barcelona. Gasol, who grew up in the Barcelona suburbs, is also helping McClung find a place to live.
McClung has appeared in 17 NBA games across five teams, averaging 5.9 points. His national profile, however, surged when he became the first G League player to compete in the NBA dunk contest, then made history again by winning the event three years in a row.
After several seasons moving between the NBA and the G League, McClung landed his first standard NBA contract in October 2025 with the Indiana Pacers, but he was waived a week later. He later signed another two-way deal with the Chicago Bulls in February, the same month he chose not to pursue becoming the dunk contest’s first four-time champion.
He remains one of the best players in the history of the G League and is the league’s leading career scorer and a two-time MVP. Lenoir McClung said that her son loved playing in the NBA’s minor league circuit but that she believes his time there ran its course.
“It didn’t really make a lot of sense coming back to the G League right now,” Lenoir McClung said. “Were you going to try to break your own record again? Try to get a three-time MVP?”
