Paul Scholes has highlighted where he believes Manchester United went wrong in the summer transfer window as Erik ten Hag’s side crashed out of Europe.

United needed a result against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford to prevent them finishing bottom of Group A, but a second-half strike from Kingsley Coman sealed the club’s fate in a 1-0 defeat.

The ignominious exit marks just the latest in what has been a campaign of ups and downs for Ten Hag in his second season in the hot seat at Old Trafford.

Speaking on TNT Sports prior to Tuesday’s Champions League fixture, Scholes insisted that United’s failure to sign proven talents in the summer window had led to their lack of consistency this season.

‘I think there was probably a couple of big mistakes this summer.’ He explained.

‘I think recruitment at Manchester United this summer was the easiest it could ever have been.

‘You think of the likes of Harry Kane, £100 million and you get him. He would have come here.

‘The other one was Declan Rice, £100m and you’re buying a proper known quality, the right characters, they know about this club, they know the country, they are quality quality players. I thought it was so easy.’

United had been linked with both Kane and Rice throughout the summer window, but were ultimately unable to secure a deal for either England international with the pair instead moving to Bayern and Arsenal respectively.

One player that the club were able to sign this summer was goalkeeper Andre Onana, who arrived from Inter Milan in a £47m deal back in July.

Since his arrival the Ghana international has largely failed to replicate the performances that saw him held in such high regard prior to the move, but Scholes insisted that supporters have to be patient.

‘The problem is the goalkeeper I suppose.

‘[Ten Hag] did need to buy a goalkeeper, but this one hasn’t quite worked out as he would’ve liked yet. You’ve got to give him time, of course you have.’
