Arsenal fans feel they were wrongly denied a penalty during their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa that denied them going back to the top of the Premier League table.

John McGinn was the hero for Villa as his seventh minute strike was enough to see Unai Emery’s men take all three points against the Gunners, just days after beating reigning champions Manchester City.

However, Arsenal will look to a second half tussle between Gabriel Jesus and Villa’s Douglas Luiz where they feel they could have been awarded a penalty.

But the striker’s complaints were waved away by referee Jarred Gillett and then VAR concluded that there was no foul and a penalty wasn’t given.

Arsenal’s complaints were further fuelled by comparisons to a similar challenge by Virgil van Dijk that was given earlier in the day during Liverpool’s win over Crystal Palace.

The Dutch defender also kicked the foot of the attacker in similar way to Luiz and on this occasion the penalty was given.

Jean-Philippe Mateta then stepped up to convert the spot-kick, before Liverpool turned the game around late on.

It proved not to be Arsenal’s day, as they wasted a string of opportunities to level, and were even denied a late equaliser after Kai Havertz’s goal was ruled out by VAR for handball.

The win for Villa sees them go within a point off second-placed Gunners, and means they’ve now won 15 consecutive home games – a new club record.

For Arsenal, their second defeat of the season sees them drop off the top spot following Liverpool’s late win at Selhurst Park.
