Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League as Darwin Nunez’s first league goal for almost two months helped them to a 2-0 victory at struggling Burnley on Tuesday.

Nunez’s precision finish after six minutes gave Liverpool a flying start at Turf Moor but Jurgen Klopp’s side struggled to find the killer second goal.

Mohamed Salah was denied by the crossbar and both Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott had goals disallowed as Burnley clung on, until Diogo Jota’s 90th-minute effort sealed the points.

Mail Sport’s Joe Bernstein takes you through the things you might have missed.

Klopp extends perfect record

Jurgen Klopp has a 100 per cent record on Boxing Day so it’s little surprise this was one piece of fixture scheduling he didn’t complain about.

Liverpool had previously won on December 26 under the German against Leicester (twice), Swansea, Newcastle and Aston Villa by an aggregate score of 17-1.

So while Klopp did point out this was his team’s fourth match in 10 days and he needed to make changes, there was no specific grumble about being made to play the day after Christmas! Now his record extends to six wins out of six on this date.

Incidentally, only one Liverpool player remains from the squad that provided Klopp’s only defeat at Turf Moor in 2016, defender Joel Matip who is currently injured.

Stewards were on red alert

The only silver lining for Burnley as Darwin Nunez fired in Liverpool’s opening goal was that it didn’t require stewards rushing into the stands to separate rival fans.

Chairman Alan Pace had apologised in his programme notes for the ‘unacceptable scenes’ at The Clarets prior home game when Everton supporters got into the home end.

Security outside the stadium was high with a large contingent travelling from Merseyside but the only celebrating was done by Nunez and in the official away section, which will please Burnley who had conducted an interval review into the previous weekend’s breakdown in segregation.

Klopp has faith in Elliott

Harvey Elliott will have a huge part to play when Mo Salah heads to the African Cup of Nations next month so it was interesting to see the youngster react with good grace when his goal was ruled out because the Egyptian King had strayed offside.

Elliott is only 20 but Klopp already puts a lot of trust on him and as one Liverpool great Alan Hansen knows to his cost, you can win things with kids!
