Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp ripped into Tottenham after they were beaten 4-0 by Liverpool in their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

Spurs headed into the clash at Anfield with a 1-0 lead from last month’s first leg, but they were torn apart by Arne Slot’s side on Thursday night.

Despite resisting some early pressure, Cody Gakpo put the Reds ahead to level the tie in the 34th minute – and from there it was one-way traffic.

The Reds registered 26 shots, while Ange Postecoglou’s side failed to muster an attempt on target as the club’s 17-year trophy drought looks set to continue.

And, following the clash, Redknapp let rip at his former side, insisting it was one of their worst days in recent history.

‘(From) Liverpool’s perspective, it was fantastic, the way they got after them, set the high tempo,’ he said on Sky Sports. ‘The manager got everything right and when you have Salah up front, you get goals and assists every week.

‘But from Spurs’ perspective I cannot remember a team in my lifetime going down with less than a fight as they did today.

‘I feel sorry for those young players. Djed Spence played 14 positions tonight, I have never seen anything like it. I would look at the experienced players to lead, they didn’t do it one bit. There have been some lows, but that today is horrendous.’

Carragher agreed with his colleague, and went onto claim that the defeat was symptomatic of a poor mentality at Tottenham.

‘It was never in doubt before the game,’ he added. ‘When do Tottenham ever win a big game and win against the odds and surprise? The odds are massively in favour of Liverpool.

‘It’s not just this Spurs team, they never shock you. I’m trying to think of the last big game they won… it was probably the Ajax game (in the Champions League in 2019).

‘They were very lucky (against Ajax), they got battered most of the game. Whenever they go in to big games, you never think there are going to win.

‘That’s not just me as a Liverpool fan, none of those Spurs fans would have believed they were going to Wembley.’

The result adds to what has been a dismal season for Spurs, with Postecoglou’s side languishing in 14th in the Premier League after losing 13 of their 24 games.

The Australian has come under significant pressure in recent times despite Spurs’ lengthy injury list, and many had claimed the Liverpool clash, plus the weekend’s FA Cup trip to Aston Villa, were crucial for his future.

And Carragher continued to lambast Tottenham’s performance, claiming they were ‘worse than Accrington’, despite the League Two side losing 4-0 to the Reds in the FA Cup third round last month.

I’m not just saying this for a headline,’ Carragher said. ‘I think of Accrington, Liverpool didn’t play their best team.

‘But they gave more, caused Liverpool more of a problem and that’s not right. It was Liverpool’s best team and they were giving more against Accrington.

‘You think when promoted teams come to Anfield, they wouldn’t play with that fear (that Spurs did). They had a one goal lead as well.’

He continued: ‘That was so easy, it goes back to the stereotype we all have with Tottenham.

‘I loved the Poch (Mauricio Pochettino) team, but there is a mental block with the club.

Carragher even claimed Spurs were worse than Accrington Stanley (blue top) despite the League Two side being thumped 4-0 by the Reds in the FA Cup third round last month

‘It goes back a long time, even when I was a kid. That is a typical Tottenham team. The fans say they have Spurs back – they have the one back we all watched for 40 years.

‘You never expect them to win anything, it’s not a big game, and when they get beat it’s bad.’

Spurs return to action on Sunday with the aforementioned FA Cup trip to Villa Park, while Liverpool travel to Plymouth.

The Reds then face a hectic month before they take on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, March 16.
