A 36-year-old man is set to appear in court next month following allegations of displaying Nazi tattoos at a beach in Newcastle.

Andrew Lorant was reportedly on a family outing at Bar Beach on Christmas Eve when another beachgoer noticed tattoos on his legs that appeared to be hate symbols.

The tattoos in question, located on the back of his legs, allegedly included the SS bolts—a Nazi symbol—and the words “white power.”

Under NSW law, it is a criminal offence to publicly display a Nazi symbol.
The beachgoer who took the photos shared them on social media and also reported them to police.

Lorant was apprehended around 6:30 p.m. yesterday at his Urunga residence, located south of Coffs Harbour.

Following his arrest, he was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station, where he was charged with knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol in public without excuse and causing a prohibited Nazi symbol to be displayed in a public place.

If convicted, Lorant could face a maximum penalty of 12 months in prison and a fine of $11,000.

Premier Chris Minns condemned the symbols allegedly depicted.

“There’s no place for it. People who are propagating that or are responsible for tattooing it, they should be ashamed of themselves,” he said.

“We’re going to do everything we can to stamp out hate in our community.”

Lorant was granted strict bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on January 22.
