The victims involved in a fatal limousine accident in 2016 have been awarded a $104 million verdict against the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority after the tragedy in Elgin, Illinois.

The crash happened March 25, 2016 on Interstate 90 in Elgin. Friday’s decision followed legal battle that lasted over nine years.

Lawyers shared video of the challenges Rob Rosa and his husband Michael Johnson have dealt with since the crash.

The limousine was transporting six individuals from Wisconsin to O’Hare International Airport for a trip to Mexico when it overturned, resulting in the death of a 53-year-old woman, as confirmed by authorities.

Five passengers, along with the 20-year-old limo driver, were injured.

Four male passengers and two female passengers, ranging in age from 45-64, were in the white Lincoln Town Car.

The driver reported to the Illinois State Police that he lost control after being blinded by the sun around 7:15 a.m. on March 25, 2016. Unable to see the traffic ahead, he crashed into a concrete barrier, causing the limo to flip onto its roof.

Dave Schmidt, the assistant chief of the Elgin Fire Department, explained that the I-90 section runs directly east, and during that morning, the sun was rising at an angle that made visibility challenging.

When crews arrived, five people had already removed themselves from the vehicle. The crash shut down several lanes of eastbound I-90.

The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority commented on Friday’s ruling, stating, “We are reviewing the verdict and have no further remarks at this time.”
