Nine men have been charged in a multi-agency operation investigating an alleged syndicate behind the importation of tonnes of illicit drugs into Victoria and the trafficking across the country.

An extensive ten-month investigation has culminated in the charging of nine individuals, their ages ranging from 31 to 72, in connection with a suspected interstate drug trafficking conspiracy. The charges span a variety of offenses related to this alleged operation.

Seven of the men are now facing a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if found guilty.

Authorities claim that the incidents under scrutiny are linked to a criminal syndicate that is believed to have taken advantage of connections within the trucking industry, using these networks to transport illegal drugs across state lines.

The investigation is far from over, with police not discounting the possibility of additional arrests. They are also delving deeper into the international network suspected of orchestrating an attempt to offload illegal substances into Australian waters via a so-called “mothership.”

“Organised criminals are targeting Australia because of the relentless demand for illegal goods here, and the community’s readiness to pay a premium for them,” stated AFP Detective Superintendent Ray Imbriano, highlighting the ongoing challenge facing law enforcement.
