Elon Musk is making waves in the political sphere again by financially backing a staunch Trump supporter aiming to replace Mitch McConnell. The CEO of Tesla has reportedly contributed a hefty $10 million to Nate Morris, a fervent Trump advocate, as revealed by Axios. Morris, who was among the final candidates endorsed by Charlie Kirk before Kirk’s untimely death last September, is challenging the established political landscape. “He’s battling the McConnell Machine and requires our support to overcome it,” stated a representative from Turning Point, echoing Kirk’s sentiments. “If we desire change in the Senate, we need new senators. Kentucky is the battleground.”
Musk signals GOP return ahead of 2026 midterms
This substantial donation from Musk signals the billionaire’s intent to dive back into politics during the 2026 midterm elections. By aligning with one of the wealthiest individuals globally, the Republican party has gained a significant asset for their fundraising efforts, crucial for maintaining their congressional control. Musk, who previously distanced himself from Trump due to allegations linking the former president to the late Jeffrey Epstein, had even considered forming a third party. However, his support for Morris marks a clear allegiance to the GOP and its candidates, including those previously backed by the late Turning Point founder.
In addition to this recent contribution, Musk has made significant donations to GOP super PACs supporting both the House and Senate. These financial commitments followed a private dinner with Vice President JD Vance and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles in November. According to several reports, Musk has confided in close associates about his intentions to further support Republican candidates. The $10 million donation to the pro-Morris super PAC, named Fight for Kentucky, represents Musk’s largest single contribution to a Senate candidate to date.
Musk was Trump’s biggest donor in 2024 election
During the 2024 election, Musk was pivotal in financing Trump’s political operation and early voting initiatives in key battleground states. Pro-Trump operations received approximately $300 million from Musk, making him the largest donor of the entire election. The donation by Musk suggests he is looking to support candidates that abandon traditional GOP talking points. Musk was reportedly impressed with Morris’ anti-McConnell and anti-establishment message.
Musk-backed Morris trails rivals in Kentucky GOP race
Morris (pictured), who is running as an anti-immigration hardliner, launched his campaign during an interview on Donald Trump Jr’s podcast last year. Morris is running against Daniel Cameron, who Trump endorsed for governor in Kentucky in 2023, and Andy Barr, a congressman from Lexington. A recent survey of GOP voters in Kentucky indicates Morris is trailing far behind his two biggest rivals with only 13% support compared to Cameron’s 40% and Barr’s 25%.
Any success for Morris going forward will likely be credited to Musk. Morris has poured $3 million of his own money into the campaign, but the heavy personal spending has failed to deliver a significant boost for him in the polls. Reports indicate Morris is a close personal friend to the vice president, but President Trump has not formally issued an endorsement in the Senate race.
