GameStop has announced the permanent closure of several stores, including those in Jacksonville and Palatka, as part of a significant downsizing effort involving over 400 locations nationwide.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As the new year of 2026 approaches, GameStop is moving forward with shutting down over 470 of its stores across the country. The First Coast has already seen its share of closures.
According to a previous filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company revealed plans to close many more stores during fiscal 2025, concluding on January 31, 2026. In its last fiscal year, GameStop shuttered 590 outlets across the U.S.
While the Texas-headquartered gaming retailer has not disclosed the full list of closures, its website indicates hundreds of stores have already ceased operations. Approximately 40 of these are in the states of Florida and Georgia.
Among the already closed locations are the GameStop on Lem Turner Road in Jacksonville and the sole Palatka branch on South Moody Road.
GameStop’s stock has seen a significant decline compared to last May. This drop follows the reemergence of Keith Gill, known as “Roaring Kitty,” who publicly backed the company after three years of silence. Gill was a key figure in the 2021 “meme” stock phenomenon that saw GameStop’s stock price skyrocket past $120.
