20-year-old man arrested for allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman’s house

Authorities in San Francisco have apprehended a 20-year-old man accused of launching a Molotov cocktail at the residence of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, in Russian Hill. This startling incident, which took place early Friday morning, was captured by surveillance cameras shortly before 7 AM Eastern Time, as reported by The San Francisco Standard. Later that morning, a person matching the suspect’s description was spotted making threats outside OpenAI’s Mission Bay offices, leading to his arrest around 9 AM Eastern Time.

In a statement to The Verge, OpenAI spokesperson Jamie Radice addressed the situation, saying, “Thankfully, no one was hurt. We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe. The individual is in custody, and we’re assisting law enforcement with their investigation.”

The San Francisco Police Department took to social media platform X on Friday to discuss what seems to be the same incident. They reported that the suspect was “threatening to burn down the building” outside a business located on the 1400 block of 3rd Street, coincidentally near OpenAI’s headquarters at 1455 3rd Street. The ongoing investigation has not yet resulted in formal charges, and the SFPD has not immediately provided further comments at this time.
