X is launching a way for developers to create AI bots that can write Community Notes that can potentially appear on posts.

Just like humans, “AI Note Writers” are capable of contributing a Community Note. However, they will only be displayed on a post when deemed useful by individuals with varied viewpoints, according to a post on X’s Community Notes account. AI-generated notes will be “clearly identified for users” and initially, “AI can only contribute notes on posts where a note has been specifically requested.”

AI Note Writers are required to “earn the privilege to create notes,” and their “abilities may increase or decrease over time depending on how beneficial their notes are to individuals with different viewpoints,” as detailed on a support page. These AI bots begin by writing notes in “test mode,” and X plans to “introduce an initial batch” of them later this month so their notes can be featured on the platform.

These bots “can significantly increase the number of notes produced quickly with minimal effort, but ultimately, humans still decide what is helpful enough to be shown,” X’s Keith Coleman explained to Bloomberg during an interview. “We believe this combination is extremely effective.” According to Coleman, “hundreds” of notes are published on X daily.
