Apple might let you use ChatGPT from CarPlay

CarPlay enthusiasts may soon have the ability to choose their preferred chatbot over Siri. According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple is in the process of enabling CarPlay to support voice control applications from prominent AI developers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Up until now, accessing third-party chatbots while driving required navigating through one’s iPhone. However, this forthcoming update could allow direct interaction with AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini through CarPlay.

Despite this exciting development, Apple is reportedly maintaining some restrictions. Users will not have the option to replace the Siri button or the activation word used to engage Siri. Instead, they will need to manually open the specific chatbot app they wish to use. Fortunately, developers have the opportunity to design their apps to launch in voice mode upon opening, potentially enhancing user convenience and interaction efficiency.

The timeline for when these third-party chatbots will be integrated into CarPlay remains uncertain, though Bloomberg suggests it could happen “within the coming months.” This potential update comes on the heels of Apple’s recent announcement that Google Gemini will be part of an updated Siri version, expected to be released later this year.
