BYD to install thousands of 5-minute EV chargers across Europe

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is ramping up its efforts to dominate the European automotive market with the introduction of high-speed Flash Chargers throughout the region. The company has already launched its first chargers in Germany and the UK and plans to establish 3,000 units across Europe by the close of next year.

According to the Financial Times, each charger carries an estimated price tag of €580,000, or approximately $670,000, bringing the total investment for the network to about $2 billion. These 1,500kW stations boast a power capacity that far exceeds Tesla’s 500kW V4 Superchargers, although Tesla already operates 20,000 chargers in Europe. BYD, which has been gradually surpassing Tesla in global sales, assures that its chargers will not burden the energy grid, as they are designed to charge vehicles using pre-charged batteries replenished overnight.

The Flash Chargers are compatible with any vehicle equipped with a standard CCS charge port. However, only BYD vehicles featuring the innovative Blade Battery can achieve maximum charging speeds. Presently, the only such model available in Europe is the Denza Z9 GT, priced at €115,000 ($133,000), which can reach 70 percent charge in just five minutes using these advanced chargers.
