Former Tumblr head Jeff D’Onofrio steps in as acting CEO at the Washington Post

Will Lewis is stepping down as CEO of The Washington Post after a tumultuous period marked by widespread layoffs. Jeff D’Onofrio, who previously led Tumblr between 2017 and 2022, will assume the role of acting CEO and publisher. Since June of last year, D’Onofrio has been serving as the CFO of the Post, providing him with a direct insight into Jeff Bezos’ transformation of the renowned newspaper over the past nine months.

While D’Onofrio’s background in traditional news media is limited, his career does include a stint as general manager of Yahoo News during its time under Verizon. However, he is better known for his efforts to reshape Tumblr’s reputation by banning adult content, a move that resulted in a 30 percent decline in traffic. Tumblr, originally acquired by Yahoo for $1.1 billion in 2013, was sold in 2019 to Automatic, the company behind WordPress, for reportedly less than $3 million.
