Nikon has just unveiled the ZR, its first official co-brand with RED, the cinema camera company it purchased in April of last year.
The ZR enhances Nikon’s strong points, such as its versatile Z-mount, internal RAW video recording, and well-regarded color science, specifically for videographers. Its standout feature is the ability to record RED R3D NE files, which enables adjustments to settings like ISO and white balance in post-production, providing significantly more flexibility after filming. This was a key selling point for RED cameras previously, and it simplifies the process of matching ZR footage with existing RED camera footage.
The ZR is largely built upon Nikon’s Z6III model from the past year, incorporating a similar partially-stacked 24MP full-frame sensor, 7.5 stops of in-body image stabilization (IBIS), and over 15 stops of dynamic range. However, it features a more compact body measuring just 133×80.5×48.7mm and introduces additional video-centric capabilities like 32-bit audio via the hotshoe and microphone jack, along with a sizable 4-inch articulating touchscreen offering 1000 nits of brightness.
The Nikon ZR will be available for $2,199 on October 20th.
