Meta has informed thousands of employees of their layoffs as part of a strategy to balance its significant investments in artificial intelligence. According to an email obtained by Business Insider, the company explained the decision was a step towards enhancing operational efficiency and offsetting the costs of its new ventures.
Speculation about potential layoffs began in March, with initial reports suggesting that Meta could reduce its workforce by as much as 20 percent. However, a recent update revealed that around 8,000 employees—approximately 10 percent of Meta’s 78,000-strong workforce—are now expected to be affected by the cuts.
These layoffs come in the wake of Meta’s January forecast, projecting capital expenditures of $115 billion to $135 billion by 2026. This investment is intended to bolster the company’s Meta Superintelligence Labs and core operations, representing a significant increase from the $72.22 billion spent in 2025. In addition to the layoffs, Business Insider notes that Meta is reallocating over 7,000 employees to focus on new AI projects, while Bloomberg reports that 6,000 vacant positions will no longer be filled.
In a message to the departing employees, Meta expressed gratitude, stating, “We want to say again that we’re grateful for your contributions. Your impact at Meta has been an important part of our story.”
Many of those affected have taken to LinkedIn, sharing posts with images of their Meta employee badges and confirming the layoffs. One former employee detailed that she, along with “8,000 metamates,” was let go. Efforts to obtain confirmation from Meta regarding the exact number of affected employees are ongoing.
