HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WLS) — A massive pileup involving over 100 vehicles occurred in western Michigan on Monday, as icy road conditions wreaked havoc, according to local authorities.

Michigan State Police reported that the collisions on westbound Interstate 196, near Hudsonville just outside Grand Rapids, resulted in injuries to about a dozen people. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

The stretch of I-196 between 32nd Avenue and 64th Street was shut down for several hours due to the incident but has since been reopened.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the crashes, which occurred at approximately 10:20 a.m.

Drivers in the vicinity are advised to steer clear of the area if possible.

Much of the Midwest is experiencing extremely cold temperatures on Monday, contributing to hazardous driving conditions.

Lake-effect snow also caused whiteout conditions near Grand Rapids earlier Monday.

Indiana State Police said multiple vehicles were involved in a crash on the Indiana Toll Road, as well.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes were closed but have since reopened. The crashes occurred in the westbound lanes between mile markers 67.1 and 67.2.

Indiana State Police say blowing snow reduced visibility, which led to the chain-reaction crash that halted traffic in both directions.

Some injuries have been reported, but none are believed to be life-threatening.

The incident happened just before noon Monday in St. Joseph County, Indiana.
