Microsoft appears to be facing renewed challenges in meeting its climate commitments, according to its 2026 sustainability report. As GeekWire noted, the company said its carbon emissions rose 25 percent in 2025, reaching 34 million metric tons “without select interventions.” Microsoft attributed the increase largely to the rapid buildout of its data center infrastructure, as well as its February decision to end purchases of “non-additional, unbundled renewable energy certificates.”
Microsoft previously pledged to become carbon negative by 2030, a target that would require the company to remove more carbon from the atmosphere than it emits. But this is not the first sign of difficulty in reaching that goal; its 2024 sustainability report also showed an increase in climate pollution. In the latest report, Microsoft acknowledged the growing strain from artificial intelligence, stating that “while AI infrastructure is driving demand for energy, water, land, and materials, sustainability solutions are not scaling fast enough to meet demand.”
