Nintendo announces a new Star Fox for the Switch 2

In a surprising twist, Fox McCloud’s cameo in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie was more than just a nod to fans—it was a hint at what was to come. Nintendo has just revealed a new Star Fox game, the first in a decade, simply titled Star Fox. Eager fans don’t have long to wait, as it is set to release on June 25th.

Nintendo has shared that this new installment draws inspiration from the beloved Star Fox 64, featuring revamped characters and enhanced graphics. It appears to be a contemporary reimagining, maintaining the original level layouts. First glimpses of the game showcase a modern aesthetic with intricately detailed characters, including an unexpectedly lifelike Slippy Toad. Fans will be pleased to know the engaging in-ship dialogue remains intact. Alongside spaceships, players can also pilot various other vehicles, such as a submarine.

In addition to its classic elements, the Star Fox revival brings fresh features, including online multiplayer battles with teams of four and the option for mouse control. Perhaps most intriguing is the addition of lifelike character avatars for online interactions. Nintendo describes these avatars as offering an “interactive experience that reflects your expressions and movements in GameChat.” For those who crave nostalgia, the game will also support the N64 controller.

The game is priced at $49.99 for digital downloads and $59.99 for physical editions, as listed on Nintendo’s website.

This announcement arrives as Nintendo’s lineup for the Switch 2 in 2026 appears somewhat sparse. Beyond Star Fox, the only other first-party titles on the horizon include Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Rhythm Heaven Groove, Splatoon Raiders, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave.

Updates, May 6th: Added the game’s digital and physical prices.
