This device brings Dolby Atmos capability to Apple CarPlay and can operate with just four speakers, thanks to its virtualization technology. The Sphera unit conveniently fits into both single-DIN and double-DIN slots in a car’s dashboard. Installation begins with a straightforward setup process: place the provided microphone at the driver’s headrest and step out of the car for about five minutes. During this time, Pioneer’s system calibrates the audio to suit the car’s unique interior. Post-calibration, users can choose their preferred listening focus—be it the driver, the passenger, or the entire cabin. In a demonstration with a 2017 Toyota Highlander equipped with four speakers and a subwoofer, the Sphera showcased its prowess. This setup used Pioneer A-Series speakers, each priced around $100, replacing the vehicle’s original speakers for the demonstration.
Pioneer’s virtualization technology astoundingly maximizes the cabin’s audio environment using only four speakers. Listening to Pink Floyd’s “Money” from The Dark Side of the Moon, the cash register effects were distinctly positioned throughout the vehicle, and as the band played, the space seemed to expand. Similarly, in Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” the background vocals enveloped the cabin, enhancing the lead vocals with depth.
Admittedly, the precision of sound placement is slightly compromised compared to setups with a greater number of speakers. However, this doesn’t detract significantly from the overall experience. The Sphera still offers a vibrant and encompassing audio atmosphere that fills the car with rich soundscapes. Scheduled for a spring release at $1,300, the Sphera provides a cost-effective alternative for those yearning for a Dolby Atmos experience without investing in a luxury car.
