Roblox is discontinuing Roblox Connect, the video calling feature it first rolled out in 2023.
Roblox Connect allowed users to start video chats through their Roblox avatars, with the avatars mirroring real-world facial expressions and movements. The feature also let people on a call move together inside a shared virtual space. But according to the company, users who are 13 and older now “predominantly” rely on Roblox’s Party Voice feature for private calls instead.
“Roblox Connect is being discontinued today, including both the developer-facing APIs and the Roblox Connect feature itself,” Roblox spokesperson Angela Allison tells The Verge. “Users 13 and up predominantly use our more recent Party Voice feature instead to make private voice calls with Trusted Friends on Roblox.”
The move follows a post from last month announcing the shutdown of Roblox Connect’s APIs. In that update, a Roblox staff member said Party Voice “handles private voice chat in a way that’s more capable and better suited to how players use Roblox today.”
When Roblox Connect was unveiled, the company said it planned to open source the feature. It remains unclear whether that ever happened, and the company has been asked for additional details.
