Samsung is on the verge of unveiling additional details about its Project Moohan mixed reality headset. The company recently announced an upcoming “Worlds Wide Open” Galaxy event set for October 21st at 10PM ET, where it plans to share more information about the gadget.
The headset will operate on Android XR, an innovative mixed reality platform created in collaboration with Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm. Samsung states that this platform is “designed to scale across different form factors, placing AI at the core of immersive, daily experiences.” My colleague Victoria Song had the chance to experiment with the headset and Android XR in late 2024, and nearly a year down the line, Samsung appears ready for a comprehensive launch of the headset.
“Project Moohan is the groundbreaking initial product constructed for the open and scalable Android XR platform, effortlessly merging everyday utility with new, immersive experiences,” according to Samsung. “This is where XR’s true potential materializes, opening up a whole new realm of possibilities.”
The announcement of the event comes amid reports that Apple is nearing the release of a new iteration of its Vision Pro headset, featuring a faster processor. A device resembling a new Vision Pro has also surfaced in FCC documents. However, Apple might be shifting its focus from headsets towards a different type of innovation; it has reportedly put a lighter Vision Pro model on hold to concentrate on developing smart glasses instead.
Update, October 14th: Added details from Samsung.
