Slack is experimenting with upgrades to Slackbot, transforming it into an AI assistant from its current role as a tool for sending reminders and alerts. This change will enable Slackbot to develop customized plans suited for your workspace, assess numerous messages, extract information from various Slack channels, and more.
“Slackbot today is fairly rudimentary,” says Rob Seaman, Slack’s senior vice president of enterprise product, to The Verge. “But we’ve actually rebuilt it from the ground up as a personalized AI companion.”
In the trial, Slackbot will be accessible as an icon near the search bar at the top of the workspace. Clicking it will open a DM-like panel on the side of the screen where prompts like “What are my priorities for today?” or “Find the latest updates on a project” can be entered. The revamped Slackbot will utilize your conversations, files, and workspace to deliver tailored assistance.
A demonstration by Slack for The Verge showcased the newly AI-enhanced Slackbot handling more intricate tasks, such as compiling a product launch plan inside a Canvas by gathering data from numerous Slack channels and assisting in crafting a social media campaign using a brand’s specific tone.
Notably, the improved Slackbot can search through a workspace using natural language. If you’re struggling to find a document due to unclear keywords, you could request Slackbot with “Find me the document that Jay shared in our last meeting.” It is also capable of accessing Microsoft Outlook and Google Calendar for coordinating meetings.
This complements the other AI-driven features Slack has already implemented, which can summarize threads and channels and translate company lingo. Rob Seaman mentions, “We’ll keep putting those little touches there where they make sense, to save users a click,” addressing the progression of these features. Existing functionalities of Slackbot, such as automated messages or customized command responses, will still be supported.
Companies can choose to opt out of using an AI Slackbot, but individuals in the workspace can’t. Slack’s AI features operate through Amazon Web Services’ virtual private cloud, “meaning that no data leaves the firewall, no data is used in the training of the models at all,” according to Seaman.
The upgraded Slackbot is already available for 70,000 employees at Salesforce (Slack’s parent company), and now the company is testing it with other customers as well. It plans to introduce the new feature to everyone at the end of the year.
