Spirit Airlines shuts down, canceling thousands of flights overnight

In a recent development, Spirit Airlines has announced its decision to wind down operations after making significant efforts to restructure its business. This move comes in the wake of trying times marked by a substantial hike in oil prices and other adverse factors that have severely impacted the airline’s financial health. Despite comprehensive attempts to secure transactions that would bolster its financial position and pave a sustainable way forward, the lack of further funding has forced Spirit to take this drastic step.

Dave Davis, the President and CEO of Spirit Airlines, expressed the gravity of the situation, saying, “For over three decades, Spirit Airlines has been a trailblazer in the travel industry, enhancing accessibility and promoting affordability. In March 2026, we successfully negotiated a restructuring plan with our bondholders, which aimed to revive the business. However, the recent and persistent surge in fuel prices has left us with no option but to initiate an orderly shutdown of the company. Reviving the business would have required hundreds of millions in additional liquidity, a sum that we simply do not have and cannot obtain. This outcome is deeply disappointing and far from what we had envisioned.”

“For more than 30 years, Spirit Airlines has played a pioneering role in making travel more accessible and bringing people together while driving affordability across the industry,” said Dave Davis, Spirit’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “In March 2026, we reached an agreement with our bondholders on a restructuring plan that would have allowed us to emerge as a go-forward business. However, the sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the Company. Sustaining the business required hundreds of millions of additional dollars of liquidity that Spirit simply does not have and could not procure. This is tremendously disappointing and not the outcome any of us wanted.”
