Tesla has officially canceled the range extender accessory it was developing for the Cybertruck. In communications obtained by Electrek, Tesla informed Cybertruck owners that it is “no longer planning to sell” the $16,000 battery pack, and customers will receive full refunds for the $2,000 deposit they initially made.

The range extender was designed to occupy approximately half of the Cybertruck’s rear bed and was initially touted to extend the range of the dual-motor Cybertruck to 470 miles. However, this estimate was later revised to 445 miles in 2024, with the original “early 2025” release date postponed to “mid-2025.”

This battery pack aimed to compensate for dissatisfaction regarding the production models of the electric pickup. The tri-motor Cybertruck, unveiled in 2019, was priced around $70,000 with a promised range exceeding 500 miles. The final model’s price of $99,990 and 301-mile range didn’t meet those expectations, nor did the $79,990 dual-motor AWD variant with a 325-mile range. Tesla’s $69,990 Long Range Cybertruck offers a 362-mile range per charge.
