Elon Musk has signaled interest in backing a $100 million Mel Gibson-directed version of The Odyssey that would aim for historical realism and be performed entirely in Homeric Greek.
The idea surfaced Monday on X, where a user called on Musk to fund Gibson with a nine-figure budget to make an adaptation featuring meticulously accurate ships, armor, weapons and casting.
The same post argued that every line of dialogue should come directly from Homer’s original epic poem and be spoken in Homeric Greek.
Roughly eight hours later, Musk responded with a brief but unmistakable endorsement: “I’m down.”
Musk, who became the world’s first trillionaire last month, has repeatedly criticized Christopher Nolan’s new blockbuster adaptation and its casting choices.
Among his objections, Musk has singled out the film’s inclusion of Black actress Lupita Nyong’o and transgender actor Elliot Page.
Even with Musk’s sustained criticism, The Odyssey delivered a huge $124 million domestic opening weekend, according to Variety.
Internationally, the film performed even more strongly, reaching $263.7 million worldwide and giving Nolan the biggest global opening of his career.

Should the version with Gibson at the helm not come to fruition, the SpaceX founder has seemed open to an even more unorthodox rendition of the Greek epic.
Musk also posted Tuesday on X that Grok Imagine, which is his AI assistant’s image and video generator, would ‘make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.’
He stated that this would happen ‘before this year ends,’ though he did not provide specifics as to what that process would look like.
In that post, Musk quoted an AI-generated video from a separate user depicting a dialogue scene from the Odyssey.
The three-minute clip showed Odysseus and Calypso, who speaks in a ‘soft Greek accent’ as requested by the user.
As of Wednesday night, Musk’s post and the AI-generated scene had received more than 18 million views combined.
Nolan recently compared AI to ‘a Trojan horse that everybody knows the Greeks are inside.’
‘It’s a transparent horse, it’s made of glass,’ he told HugoDécrypte. ‘Everybody can see what’s going on inside of there.’
The Odyssey was released in the US on July 17 and had a $124 million opening weekend domestically. It also marked Nolan’s largest global opening ever, racking in $263.7 million

This week’s posts marked Musk’s latest criticism of Nolan’s blockbuster, which he had repeatedly lashed out against before its release.
In January, Musk said that Nolan had ‘lost his integrity’ for casting Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.
Months later, Musk responded to a post that suggested Nolan was ‘so keen to race swap white characters.’
‘He wants the awards,’ Musk wrote on May 12.
Musk has also repeatedly criticized the casting of transgender actor Page for the film based on the Ancient Greek epic.
In May, Musk said that reports of Page playing Achilles in the film were ‘one of the dumbest and twisted things I’ve ever heard.’
Musk also complimented a post facetiously challenging Achilles ‘to open this pickle jar,’ writing that it was a ‘banger.’
Page does not play Achilles in Nolan’s new movie, but rather, the Greek soldier Sinon.

Musk, whose current net worth is estimated at $750.2 billion by Forbes, but is believed to have assets that amount to over a trillion, has had very limited involvement in Hollywood.
In 2005, he was credited as an executive producer in the black comedy film Thank You for Smoking, which was directed by Golden Globe winning filmmaker Jason Reitman.
Meanwhile, Gibson’s current focus appears to be the highly anticipated sequel to the 2004 film The Passion of the Christ.
The Resurrection of the Christ, as the sequel is called, is split into two parts. The first is set to premiere in theaters on May 6, 2027, with part two coming on May 25, 2028.
