Each platform aims to become the ultimate hangout spot for you and your friends — even Spotify is joining this trend recently. Following suit, TikTok is enhancing its direct messaging feature! According to an update shared with TechCrunch, TikTok will introduce voice messages and image-sharing capabilities in DMs for all users over the next few weeks.

(These updates won’t apply to accounts that are not eligible for direct messaging — TikTok sets the direct messaging feature for accounts aged 16 and older, meaning these new options will also be restricted to those accounts, TikTok spokesperson JaShel Jones explained to The Verge.)

After checking, I found that I can indeed send both voice messages and images, along with videos of up to one minute in duration, which has been an existing feature. Be cautious as holding down the microphone button initiates a recording, but it automatically sends your message once released, so ensure to drag it up or left if you need to cancel!

You’re limited to sending up to nine images (and videos) at a time, and both voice memos and videos can’t be more than a minute long.

Update, August 29th: Added TikTok clarification about who can DM and who cannot.
