In a significant step towards maintaining and enhancing its vast online resources, the Wikimedia Foundation has secured financial backing from several major tech companies, including Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Perplexity, and Mistral AI. These companies have joined Google in contributing to the foundation, primarily to access and utilize Wikipedia’s extensive array of articles. This announcement coincides with Wikipedia’s 25th anniversary celebration, marking a milestone in the foundation’s history.

The financial contributions from these tech giants are part of the Wikimedia Enterprise initiative, which was rolled out in 2021. This initiative offers a premium version of Wikipedia’s API, tailored specifically for commercial use, at a cost. Lane Becker, the senior director of earned revenue at the Wikimedia Foundation, explained to The Verge that this program provides a refined version of Wikipedia designed to meet the specific needs of commercial and AI enterprises. Becker highlighted how the foundation accommodates feature requests and adjusts data structures to better serve these companies.

According to the Wikimedia Foundation, companies like Microsoft, Perplexity, and Mistral AI have become part of the Enterprise program over the last year. Although Meta and Amazon have been involved as partners, this marks the first public acknowledgment of their participation. The funds generated from this program are crucial for supporting the foundation’s various projects and are seen as a step towards achieving a more sustainable business model.

Becker emphasized the mutual benefits of this arrangement, stating, “It is in every AI company’s best interest to support the long-term sustainability of Wikipedia, because Wikipedia and all the other projects that we support are so core to their business.” He further noted that establishing a sustainable relationship with these tech companies is vital not only for the foundation’s future but also for the ongoing success of the companies that rely heavily on Wikipedia’s resources.
