Valve wants Half-Life: Alyx to work well standalone on Steam Frame

Experiencing Half-Life: Alyx streamed from a PC to Valve’s latest Steam Frame VR headset was a revelation. Thanks to the Frame’s specialized wireless adapter and an innovative technique called “foveated streaming,” I encountered no lag while navigating through a gritty industrial environment and battling head crabs.

Interestingly, the Steam Frame is equipped with an Arm chip, which means it has the capability to run games directly on the device. Although I didn’t have the chance to play Half-Life: Alyx in this standalone mode, Valve has shared with other media outlets that they are hopeful about optimizing the game for local play.

Valve communicated to Digital Foundry that Half-Life: Alyx provides an excellent experience when streamed from a PC to the Steam Frame, and they are actively exploring the potential for a robust standalone version. Meanwhile, UploadVR reported that while Valve is optimistic about achieving standalone functionality, they acknowledge there is still significant work ahead and are not making any guarantees yet.

Here’s hoping Valve manages to pull it off. I’ve yet to dive into Half-Life: Alyx, and if I acquire a Steam Frame, experiencing it as a standalone game would be a top priority.
