X is launching a marketplace for inactive handles

In a bid to enhance its offerings, X has announced that Premium Plus and Premium Business subscribers will soon have the opportunity to explore and claim inactive usernames through the X Handle Marketplace. These handles will be classified into two main types. Priority handles, which will be available at no cost, typically consist of full names, multi-word combinations, or alphanumeric sequences. Meanwhile, rare handles, known for their exclusivity, will come with a price tag ranging from $2,500 to potentially over a million dollars, depending on their demand and uniqueness.

Emphasizing continued service rather than a one-off benefit, X is positioning this marketplace as a strategy to attract more paying members. If a user successfully acquires a new handle, their previous one will be put on hold. Although the company hints at the possibility of offering a redirect service in the future, this would be an additional paid feature. A crucial caveat to note is that if subscribers decide to downgrade their X subscription, their account will revert to the original username, thereby forfeiting the newly acquired handle.
