A Florida man has received a prison sentence for causing a fatal accident while driving under the influence, with his blood alcohol level measuring almost three times above the legal limit.

Glenn Brimmer, aged 46, has been handed a 12-year prison term, as announced by the 18th Judicial Circuit’s Office of the State Attorney. His conviction for DUI manslaughter was delivered by a Brevard County jury in September.

The incident occurred on March 2, 2018, around 7:40 p.m., when Brimmer was behind the wheel of his Hyundai Veloster traveling in the left lane on North Atlantic Avenue in Cape Canaveral. Tragically, 66-year-old cyclist John Perrin was also on the road at that time.

Brimmer collided with Perrin from behind, resulting in significant damage to the car’s windshield and bending one of Perrin’s bicycle wheels, as shown in photos released by authorities. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived promptly at the scene.

Upon testing, Brimmer’s blood alcohol content was found to be 0.23. He also underwent a field sobriety test, which he failed to pass, according to a criminal complaint. During the test, Brimmer was reportedly laughing and exclaimed, “Let’s do it!” before failing.

These findings were presented to the jury during a trial that took place seven years post-accident. Authorities explained the lengthy delay was due to court closures and over 40 motions from Brimmer’s defense team, which aimed to have the case dismissed or evidence suppressed.

Deputies said they spoke with a witness who said they saw Brimmer drinking at the Cocoa Beach Pier before getting into his car and “driving in a reckless manner.”

As part of his sentencing, Brimmer was also ordered to pay $750 to reimburse the funeral expenses for Perrin.
