Dana Bash Faces Backlash After Heated CNN Clash With RFK Jr.

CNN anchor Dana Bash became the focus of a heated online backlash after a combative weekend interview with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on State of the Union. The tense exchange escalated when Kennedy raised the treatment of doctors who challenged pandemic-era guidance and accused CNN of “absolute press malpractice.” Conservative media commentator Greg Price amplified the moment on X, writing that Kennedy had confronted Bash over what he described as the media’s role in misleading Americans about COVID. Price shared a clip in which Kennedy accused the network of having “marginalized” and “vilified” dissenting experts in service of a political narrative. The clip quickly spread across right-leaning social media, with the popular account Johnny MAGA calling it “the most brutal smackdown of Dana Bash ever captured on television.”

OutKick writer Ian Miller also weighed in, publishing a sharply critical piece that revisited Bash’s 2021 text messages to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former top infectious disease official who has long been accused by many Republican lawmakers of misleading the public on masks, social distancing, natural immunity and vaccines. Miller argued that CNN had repeatedly elevated what he called “malicious, misinformed ‘experts’” during the pandemic and claimed the network’s anchors accepted Fauci’s statements because of shared political instincts. During the interview, Kennedy referenced recently released diary entries that some lawmakers have said raise new questions about Fauci’s public statements on COVID-19 and its origins. He did not, however, bring up Bash’s past message praising Fauci as “a better man” for not lashing out at Republican Rep. Jim Jordan during a congressional hearing on the pandemic response.

In those messages, Bash also said her CNN colleague Wolf Blitzer had joked that few people would have faulted Fauci if he had told Jordan to “go [expletive] yourself” rather than continue answering the congressman’s questions. Kennedy used the CNN interview to argue that physicians and scientists who questioned Fauci’s guidance were unfairly targeted or pushed aside by major media outlets. “You weren’t doing your job, and your job is a fierce skepticism toward authority,” Kennedy told Bash. “You weren’t doing that. You were beating up on people who were dissenting.” Bash pushed back sharply, saying, “I will not sit here and let you attack me.” Kennedy continued by accusing Fauci of lying and saying critics of official guidance were punished for refusing to “trust the experts,” as the discussion grew increasingly testy.

Bash defended her role during the exchange, telling Kennedy that her job is “to talk to people” and gather as much information as possible for viewers. She said CNN’s pandemic coverage, including its reporting on vaccines, was based on presenting “the best information” and “the best science” available at the time. The interview drew criticism from across the political spectrum. Liberal commentator Mehdi Hasan said Bash appeared “unprepared” and argued that she allowed Kennedy “not just to get under her skin, but make multiple false and dangerous claims.” Hasan added that journalists who choose to platform conspiracy theorists or political “grifters” must be ready to counter falsehoods in real time. Former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz described the clash as “incredible” on X, while other critics claimed Bash had been “steamrolled” by the health secretary.

CNN stood by Bash following the viral interview, defending both her questioning and the network’s pandemic journalism in a statement to the Daily Mail. “Dana Bash is a veteran journalist who conducted a newsmaking interview with Secretary Kennedy in which he stated that he supports parents getting their children vaccinated against measles and addressed President Trump’s push for further study into autism and vaccines,” a CNN spokesperson said. The network added that pressing public officials with “tough, substantive questions” is central to journalism and said Bash handled the interview “incredibly well.” CNN concluded that it stands behind Bash, her reporting and the network’s broader coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic.
