Little House on the Prairie icon who played Nellie Oleson is unrecognizable as she makes surprise cameo in Netflix reboot

Alison Arngrim was nearly impossible to recognize as she made her comeback to the Little House on the Prairie universe in Netflix’s new reboot — arriving 43 years after the beloved original series came to an end.

The 64-year-old actress is best known for portraying Nellie Oleson, appearing in 104 episodes across the show’s eight-season run from 1974 to 1982.

This time, however, Arngrim steps into an entirely different role for the much-anticipated revival, which debuted on the streaming service Thursday.

In the second episode, Arngrim appears as Ida, described as a “crazy lady,” who crosses paths with the Ingalls girls while they are searching for John Edwards.

Gone are Nellie’s signature blonde curls and soft pastel bonnets; Arngrim’s Ida is instead given a rugged, unkempt look, complete with decaying teeth and dirt smeared across her face.

Ida is part of a group of frontier women who say they know Edwards’ whereabouts and assure the girls that he will be returning soon.

When Laura (Alice Halsey) senses danger and seeks to run away from the scene, Ida grabs her, leading Laura to bite her arm in an effort to flee.

The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for Arngrim for further comment on the story.

Arngrim, speaking with the Netflix site Tudum on Thursday, said she was cast in the series just weeks before cameras began rolling in Canada.

She said, ‘I got a phone call: “What are you doing in a week and a half? Could you come to Winnipeg? There’s this character, we want it to be you.”‘

Arngrim described her character on the reboot as ‘basically a crazy lady in the woods’ and ‘sort of a forest drifter with drifter friends.’

She said of the exchange on the show, ‘They’re hanging out in the woods, having their little dinner, a little campfire in the forest, and the two poor unsuspecting Ingalls girls wander in, and we’re like, “Hi, come hang out with us.”‘

Arngrim added of the role: ‘I thought, “Oh, that’s creepy as all get‑out. That sounds right up my alley. I’ll be right over!”‘

She opened up about her TV fame playing the role of Nellie Oleson, saying that ‘it really hit the fan around the third season,’ as the cast members ‘all started getting recognized.’

Arngrim said that ‘the weirdest part of child stardom is years later’ when she is recognized by fans.

‘It’s weird enough to be famous at 12, 13, 14, having strangers talk to you in the street like they know you,’ said the actress. ‘But years later, you’re 30, 40, 50, 64, and complete strangers are still coming up to you in the supermarket to discuss what you did to Laura at 12. That’s weird.’

Arngrim, when asked about the impact of her villainous character Nellie, said that ‘the trick is, if you do it right, everyone will hate you; and if you really do it right, they’ll eventually love you.’

She said of her character, ‘I was clearly the villain. I was awful. I was terrible to Laura and everyone … and yet people talk about me as iconic and say they love Nellie. They can’t get enough.’

Arngrim opened up about the differences on filming the original series and the reboot.

‘The first part that blew my mind was the costuming,’ she said. ‘On our show in 1974, we didn’t really do corsets.

‘We had some authentic stuff – little camisoles, bloomers – but on this show, it’s the slip, and then the corset goes over the slip, full corseting, full costuming. I was in heaven. I love this stuff. I thought, “Oh, we’re going all out. This is fabulous.”‘

She explained the makeup process she underwent to play the character, a forest drifter living in the woods.

‘They proceeded to make me look like I took much less care of myself than I actually do,’ Arngrim said. ‘They painted my teeth and made them look horrible.

‘They painted my nails to look disgusting, filthy, and diseased. All my beautiful nails, my beautiful teeth, my beautiful skin – out the window.’

She added, ‘But it was the 1800s. People are out in the sun; there’s no sunblock, and this woman clearly is a hard case. She’s been drinking, living in the forest, and not hydrated. She’s rough.’

Arngrim, speaking with ReMIND this past February, said that she had not yet been contacted to appear in the reboot, but welcomed the opportunity.

‘I have been joking for years that I’m finally old enough to play Mrs. Oleson, so call me,’ she said.

The reboot of Little House on the Prairie can be seen on Netflix.
