President Donald Trump’s Health and Human Services secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., became embroiled in a tense and extended clash with CNN anchor Dana Bash on Sunday, as the two sparred over vaccines and public health policy. The confrontation unfolded during a more than 20-minute segment on CNN’s State of the Union, where Kennedy and Bash repeatedly challenged each other over his long-running skepticism of vaccines, including the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella. With U.S. measles cases reaching a 35-year high, Bash pressed Kennedy on whether his recent remarks linking vaccines to autism had fueled vaccine hesitancy.
Kennedy accuses Bash of ‘press malpractice’
Bash also asked Kennedy what his department could do to help prevent another crisis on the scale of the coronavirus pandemic. Kennedy began by arguing that the government’s handling of COVID “cannot” be repeated in a future public health emergency. As he continued, Bash attempted to steer the conversation forward. “I really want to move on,” she said, prompting a sharp reaction from Trump’s health secretary. “Of course you do, because you were part of the problem!” Kennedy shot back, pointing his finger at the CNN host. Bash quickly rejected the accusation, saying, “No, I wasn’t part of the problem.” Kennedy doubled down, declaring, “Yes! There was absolute press malpractice,” before adding, “You weren’t allowing—” as Bash tried to regain control of the interview.
Kennedy accuses press of targeting dissenters
Kennedy continued his criticism of the media’s role during the pandemic, telling Bash, “Your job is fierce skepticism toward authority. And you weren’t doing that. You were beating up the people who were dissenting.” The HHS secretary also briefly invoked Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former head of the federal COVID-19 response, as an example of an “expert” whom the public was urged to trust despite, Kennedy alleged, making false or shifting statements. Fauci refused to answer 111 questions about the origins of COVID-19 during a dramatic Capitol Hill hearing last month, where he criticized Republicans for what he called their “unhinged obsession” with him.
Fauci refuses to answer more than 100 questions
The former chief medical adviser invoked the Fifth Amendment in the opening round of questioning to avoid self-incrimination. He went on to do so more than 100 additional times while being questioned by lawmakers on the committee. Fauci’s personal pandemic-era diaries were also released earlier this week, offering a glimpse into his private reflections during the earliest and deadliest stages of the COVID-19 crisis, including his enjoyment of interactions with celebrities as the country grappled with mounting deaths.
Fauci described his fame as ‘explosive’
“Press still hot and heavy about me. Multiple stories per day, directly or indirectly involving me,” Fauci wrote in one entry. By May 21, 2020, he described his “national and international fame” as “explosive and really unimaginable.” In the diaries, Fauci also indicated uncertainty about where the virus originated, distinguishing that question from how it spread. The records were released as part of Senator Rand Paul’s investigation into Fauci, just days before Fauci appeared before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.
