Trump reveals which Democrat he'd 'love' to see run in 2028

President Donald Trump took a quick jump into 2028 presidential politics Tuesday, riffing on the Democrat he’d like to run just days after floating two potential Republican successors.

The name he put forward is California Gov. Gavin Newsom – who has clashed with a number of Trump policies but then on Monday offered to work with the president on a $7.5 billion film production tax credit after Trump’s stunning proposal to slap a 100 percent tariff on films ‘produced in foreign lands.’

‘I’d love him to run for president on the other side,’ Trump said of Newsom.

He brought up Newsom in a backhanded way, once again turning his name into an insult by calling him ‘Gavin New-scum’ while seated alongside new Canadian PM Mark Carney, at an event where Trump softened his push to make Canada the 51st state by saying it ‘takes two to tango.’

Trump, 78, started tearing into a high-speed rail project that California voters approved back in 2008, with costs ballooning to an estimated $100 billion.

As Trump described it in the Oval Office, it is a ‘little train going from San Francisco to Los Angeles that’s being run by Gavin New-scum, the governor of California.’

‘He has got that train is the worst cost overrun I’ve ever seen. It’s like totally out of control,’ Trump said.

He complained that it’s ‘hundreds of billions of dollars for this stupid project that should have never been built.’

‘And then they realized that it would have been a lot less costly if we just gave limousine service back and forth and gave it free, they would have saved hundreds of billions of dollars. They have airplanes that go there for 1/100th the cost across correction. And they have cars. They have a thing called the highway that goes back and forth,’ he said, betraying no interest in taxpayer-funded plan to allow for a three-hour rail journey between the two hubs.

That remark drew laughs from both Rubio and Vance, who looked at each other during the exchange.

On Sunday’s ‘Meet the Press’, Trump called Vance ‘fantastic’ and Rubio ‘great’ after saying he’ll ‘be an eight-year president,’ setting up new succession drama within his administration.

The comment tamped down the idea that Trump himself might seek a third-term, even as the online Trump store unveiled hats that say ‘Trump 2028.’ MAGA influencers have been touting a potential loophole around the 22nd Amendment’s term limit that could have Trump running on the ticket as vice president, then later assuming the office again.

Newsom, 57, was among the Democrats’ most articulate surrogates last year, even as he brushed off speculation he was seeking the White House and made the case to reelect President Biden.

Trump used the rail project as a cudgel even while putting Newsom’s name out there.

‘It’s not even conceivable, like 30 times over budget, 30 times – it’s the craziest thing, and now it’s hundreds of – it was supposed to be a simple train, and I think the media should take a look at it. And I’d love him to run for president on the other side. You know, I’d love to see that.

‘But I don’t think he’s going to be running, because that one project alone, well, that and the fires and a lot of other things, pretty much put him out of the the race,’ Trump concluded.

Trump also blamed Newsom for the fires that ripped through Los Angeles, and claimed ‘we just got him a lot of water’ by sending water to agricultural areas.

‘I sent in people to open up that water because he refused to do it,’ he said, speaking of the sudden move that surprised water officials and raised fears of potential flooding.

Trump also indicated he has directed the government to put a stop on federal funds for the rail project.

‘I told our very great new Secretary of Transportation, he’s doing a good job, Sean Duffy. I said, we’re not going to pay for that thing. They are just it’s out of control,’ he said.
