Whoopi Goldberg utilized her role on The View to call for an end to the ‘politicization’ of the tragic murder of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian immigrant, on a train in Charlotte last month. “A young woman has lost her life. Let’s give that the weight it deserves,” Goldberg, 69, commented on the horrific stabbing of 23-year-old Zarutska on August 22, by Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, who has a history of criminal activity.

'And yes, a man who should have been behind bars was loose and out. His mother begged them to take him and put him away. 'So, stop politicizing this. This is not political. This has to do with how we take care of our sick Americans when they are in need.' Zarutska's slaying at the hands of a schizophrenic repeat offender was thrust into the national spotlight after surveillance video showing the vicious attack was released.

“And indeed, a man who should have been incarcerated was instead free. His mother had pleaded with authorities to detain him. This issue is not about politics. It’s about addressing how we care for our mentally ill citizens when they most need help.” The brutal murder of Zarutska by a recurrent offender with schizophrenia caught national attention after surveillance footage of the attack surfaced.

His sister revealed to the Daily Mail a recording of conversation she had with Brown days after the fatal stabbing, in which he said he wanted police to 'investigate' 'materials' that were 'controlling' him. His mother, told CNN that in addition to his mental health woes, he was homeless and living at a local shelter. In one interview, Dewitt said 'the system failed him.'

Brown’s sister shared a recording with the Daily Mail of a conversation she had with him days following the fatal event, wherein he mentioned wanting law enforcement to look into ‘materials’ he claimed were manipulating him. Brown’s mother disclosed to CNN that he suffered from mental health issues and was homeless, residing in a local shelter. In an interview, Dewitt commented that “the system failed him.”

Goldberg's statements came after outlets like CNN took pains to defend Brown. On Monday, CNN host Van Jones said we 'don't know why [Brown] did what he did,' adding that 'this man is hurting.' 'It's about the fact that we don't know how to deal with people who are hurting in the way this man was hurting,' Jones added.

Goldberg’s remarks were made in the wake of media outlets like CNN attempting to justify Brown’s actions. During a segment on Monday, CNN host Van Jones stated, “We don’t comprehend why [Brown] acted out,” suggesting that “this man is burdened with pain.” Jones elaborated, “It’s about our inability to handle individuals suffering as he was.”

'Hurt people hurt people.' A Daily Mail review of police records found that Brown was charged with misusing 911 as recently as January, when he told cops he believed someone had given him a 'man-made' material that controlled his actions. He was released without bail and a trial pending when he allegedly stabbed Zaruska to death.

A review by Daily Mail of police records highlighted that in January, Brown faced charges for misusing 911, alleging that unknown individuals had administered a ‘man-made’ substance to control him. He was released without bail, awaiting trial, when he allegedly killed Zarutska.

Brown served five years in prison for a 2014 armed robbery and was released in September 2020. In February 2021, Brown was arrested for assaulting his sister in Charlotte and leaving her with minor injuries.

Brown had previously served a five-year sentence for armed robbery in 2014 and was discharged from prison in September 2020. Then, in February 2021, Brown was again arrested for assaulting his sister in Charlotte, leaving her with minor injuries.

In July 2022, Brown was arrested for a domestic disturbance. Brown's arrest records go as back as 2007, when he was still a minor. After his January arrest for misusing 911, his release was ordered following a written promise to appear for his next hearing.

The White House said the move left Brown Jr. 'free to slaughter an innocent woman just months later.' On Tuesday, it was announced that Brown had been charged federally, which raises the possibility he could face the death penalty if convicted.
