A Philadelphia man shot and killed his wife early Friday and then barricaded himself in the basement, where children were hiding in a closet.

Philadelphia Police Capt Bill Fisher said officers responded to a call about a possible shooting just before 1 a.m. in the Northern Liberties neighborhood, according to WCAU.

SWAT officers entered the home about two hours later and found the 55-year-old victim shot in the face in a third-story bedroom, KYW said. They arrested the 62-year-old suspect after they found him in the basement.

The children, who were related to the couple, were not harmed, according to WPVI.

Investigators are probing what led up to the shooting, and the identities of the suspect and victim have not been released.
