On Thursday, a Massachusetts woman admitted to encouraging her boyfriend’s May 2019 suicide as part of a plea deal that spared her from prison.

Inyoung You, 23, pleaded guilty in Suffolk County to involuntary manslaughter and received a 2-and-a-half year suspended sentence in 10 years of probation. She is also barred from financially profiting from the case, according to WCVB.

The Boston Herald reported, You and her boyfriend, Alexander Urtula, 22, were students at Boston College when Urtula jumped to his death from a parking garage near Northeastern University the same day he was to graduate. You was on the parking garage’s roof when her boyfriend killed himself.

Prosecutors said You threatened to self-harm to manipulate Urtula and those threats escalated before Urtula’s suicide, according to the Boston Herald.

Of the 75,000 text messages exchanged between the couple, prosecutors said You told Urtula to “go die” and to “kill yourself” thousands of times.

You is also required to undergo mental health treatment and complete 300 hours of community service while on probation. She declined to give a statement, with her lawyer telling the Herald that she is “very distraught” following Thursday’s sentencing.
