Linda Smith was a young woman from the United States who died in 1961.

Earls Colne Primary School and Halstead Secondary Modern were her schools.

Pocatello: Linda Smith Missing Case Update – Was Her Killer Ever Found?

Linda Smith went missing on 16 January 1961. 

Four days later, people found her dead body in a field off Stackwood Road, Polstead. Reportedly, someone strangled her to death with her school scarf.

Witnesses saw Linda alive for the last time during an errand to the newsagents she made from her great aunt’s house in the Essex village of Earls Colne. It was almost her routine job that took about 15 minutes to complete.  

Many people saw her on the way to the newsagents but didn’t remember Linda going inside. Someone even spotted her having a chat with a local cobbler. No one has seen her alive since. 

Although an investigation followed, the police didn’t arrest anyone. It remained a cold case until 2007 as it reopened and got reassigned to investigators.

The Pocatello Police Department has since taken charge, cooperating with her family members. Along with examining Linda’s remains, they have also inspected available evidence and made a joint effort with the Idaho State University Anthropology Department to crack the case.

On 9 February 2022, the department provided an update on the case. Although they haven’t released any information for publication or broadcast due to it being active, they have said that the original investigators made some errors in their investigation.

Further, they also mentioned the absence of procedural and forensic measures. And they expressed their appreciation towards the true-crime podcast, The Deck, for bringing the 1961 homicide case to a bigger audience.

As for Linda Smith’s age, she was 12 at her death in 1961.

She was probably born sometime in or about 1949 to Robert and Patricia Smith as one of the six children.

If Linda had survived, she would be 72 years old now. June of this year will mark 61 years of her murder.
