West Ham are in a race against time to sign a striker before the summer’s window closes, with the club having failed to reach an agreement in talks for Corinthians over Yuri Alberto.

That is despite Tim Steidten, the club’s technical director, having flown to Brazil to try to seal the deal.

Steidten has now returned to London with West Ham considering other options, including PSG’s Hugo Ekitike and Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri. Juventus midfielder Filip Kostic is also a target.

Asked specifically about Ekitike, he said: ‘You wouldn’t get me commenting on a player from another club.’

Asked about Kostic, he added: ‘I’m an admirer of a lot of players but again, I wouldn’t comment on a player from another club.’

While Steideten was in Brazil, other names that were getting thrown into the mix included Flamengo’s Pedro and Santos’ Marcos Leonardo.

It remains to be seen if they will revisit Alberto late on deadline day but as of Thursday, club sources suggested that transfer had now fallen through.

Jesse Lingard is still training with West Ham but the club want to wait until after deadline day before deciding whether to snap him up as a free agent.
