Mason Greenwood’s loan club Getafe have been branded ‘tone deaf’ after the Spanish side hailed ‘MasonMania’ in social media posts following the controversial forward’s signing from Manchester United.

Getafe moved for Greenwood on transfer deadline day and took part in his first training session on Tuesday.

Greenwood is seeking to rebuild his career having not played competitive football since December 2021, after he was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted rape.

Man United completed their internal investigation into the player’s conduct in August and mutually agreed with the 21-year-old forward that his career should ‘recommence’ away from Old Trafford.

Getafe have faced criticism for their decision to sign Greenwood, but the club have continued to promote his arrival on their social media accounts.

A clip released on the Twitter which showed Greenwood greeting and posing for photos with young supporters.

Getafe labelled the clip ‘The MasonMania’, with the new forward also seen signing a fan’s flag.

The Spanish outfit were slammed on social media for the post, with the club branded ‘tone deaf’ and having ‘zero shame’.

‘Getafe have to be the most tone deaf club I’ve ever seen in my life. Read the room,’ one account said.

‘This is all a bit mental. Still wrapping my head round their marketing strategy. Seems like they’re just forcing us content to desensitise everyone,’ a second said.

‘I’m sorry this is slightly comical at this point. Wtf????, a third wrote, with another commenting ‘There is zero shame in this world.’

Despite social media criticism, Greenwood was warmly welcomed during an open training session on Tuesday.

One young fan was pictured holding up a sign reading ‘Mason G. Can you give me your t-shirt please’.

The sign included photos of Greenwood and the Manchester United club crest, as well as his former shirt at the Premier League club.

Fans were also pictured wearing Greenwood’s new Getafe shirt, with the English forward having been confirmed as the LaLiga side’s new number 12.

Greenwood is set to be presented as a Getafe player on Tuesday evening.

His first training session was promoted on the club’s social media, with a video on the side’s English-language Twitter account showing Greenwood stepping onto the pitch with his new team-mates ahead of the open session.

The video was shared with the caption: ‘We love you Mason Greenwood’, tagging the player and adding multiple heart emojis.

Greenwood’s loan deal with Getafe is thought to include a break clause which would allow the side to send the player back to United during the January window if unhappy with how the move has developed.

A domestic abuse charity in Spain has criticised Getafe’s decision to sign Greenwood, calling on the club to overturn its decision.

A club spokesperson has reportedly defended the move by stating that Greenwood had been ‘declared innocent’.

Getafe head coach Jose Bordalas has defended the club, but admitted it was a ‘delicate situation’.

‘It is a very delicate situation to trivialise that issue,’ Bordalas said.

‘Everyone knows what happened and appropriate measures were taken. Everyone knows how it ended, with a non-convictory sentence.

‘He is a footballer of a very high level and arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm.’
