Damaurea Grant was arrested in North Carolina in October 2024. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced he had been extradited

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The individual charged in the shooting death of Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Corrections Officer Brad McNew has been brought to Duval County to confront several felony accusations, including first-degree murder. Upon his arrival in Florida, JSO secured Demaurea Grant with McNew’s handcuffs, considering it a “symbolic reminder of the life he took.”

Grant, a 30-year-old North Carolina resident, was apprehended there following the Oct. 12 incident, although he initially resisted extradition. On Tuesday, he was transported back to Florida by JSO task force officers.

A grand jury has indicted Grant, who now faces charges of first-degree murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He could potentially receive the death penalty if found guilty. Currently, he is detained in Clay County.

McNew was killed after stepping in to intervene during a domestic dispute at a gas station on Jacksonville’s Northside, according to JSWO. The woman involved, 26-year-old Makayla Huggins, who was driving the vehicle from which the shots were fired, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact. She is scheduled for sentencing later this month.

JSO says McNew is remembered by his wife, son, fellow officers, and many friends. The agency expressed gratitude to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, which is housing Grant as he awaits trial.
