CHICAGO (WGN) — Right after the election of Chicago-native Cardinal Robert Prevost as Pope, a pressing question arose: does he support the Cubs or the White Sox?

Talking to Nexstar’s WGN on Thursday, Prevost’s brother John shared the much-anticipated answer: Pope Leo XIV, formerly known as Prevost, is indeed a fan of the South Siders, a nickname for the White Sox, who play their games at Rate Field on Chicago’s South Side.

But the household was split: mom was a Cubs fan and his father was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Father Gregory Sakowicz, the rector at Holy Name Cathedral, told the Associated Press that when the new pope was announced, the sun broke through in Chicago, which he poetically described as “God’s way of staying incognito.”

He said he was “happily shocked,” and also wondered if the new Pope supported the Cubs or Sox. When a journalist said she’d heard he’s for the Cubs, Sakowicz chuckled. “God bless him,” he said.

To Sakowicz’s possible disappointment, John Prevost confirmed that his brother is a lifelong White Sox fan.

“He was never, ever a Cubs fan, so I don’t know where that came from,” Prevost said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
