Barry Keoghan is stepping into the lightâand getting real about the darkness that nearly consumed him.
The 32-year-old actor, renowned for captivating performances in The Banshees of Inisherin, Saltburn, The Batman, and Eternals, is now openly discussing his battle with drug addiction. In an honest interview with Hollywood Authentic, Keoghan revealed that his struggles with substance abuse worsened just as his career in Hollywood started flourishing in the early 2020s.
“I’m no longer in denial,” Keoghan expressed to the publication. “I recognize that I have an addiction, and I am an addict. Accepting this is what allows you to move forward and find ways to manage it.”
This candid revelation comes from an actor who has usually kept his personal life private, particularly after a 2021 incident of public intoxication in Dublin, after which he was released without charges and given a fine.
Keoghan, who earned an Oscar nomination for The Banshees of Inisherin, also looked back on a childhood marked by instability. After losing his mother, Debbie, to drug addiction at age 12, he and his brother bounced through foster care before settling with their grandmother. He added that his father, two uncles, and a cousin also died due to drug-related causes, and his brother recently sought treatment as well.
âThat should be enough to go, âOk, if I dabble here, Iâm f—ed,ââ Keoghan said. âBut your curiosity is a powerful thing.â
That curiosityâand the high-octane environment of fameâonly grew more dangerous after his breakout in Christopher Nolanâs Dunkirk. The Hollywood spotlight brought success, sure, but also what Keoghan described as âan enormous amount of pressure.â
Even the birth of his son Brando in 2022 wasnât an instant fix. Keoghan admitted he was still struggling post-fatherhood, and in 2023, he and Brandoâs mother, Alyson Kierans, split. The actor later made headlines again for a brief romance with singer Sabrina Carpenter in 2024âfollowed by a messy public breakup that sent Keoghan offline amid cheating rumors. He pushed back hard before vanishing from social media, calling out the âabsolute lies, hatred, [and] disgusting commentaryâ heâd received on Instagram.
The profile didnât shy away from physical reminders of Keoghanâs past either. He revealed a large scar tracing his right armâone of several he attributes to his time battling addiction.
While Keoghan didnât go into specifics about his recovery or any formal treatment, he made it clear heâs in a different headspace now.
âIâm at peace,â he said. âIâve apologizedâmainly to myself more than anything else for all the pain Iâve put people and myself through.
â[Iâm] responsible for everything I do,â he added. âIâm accepting. Iâm present. Iâm a father. Iâm getting to just see that haze that was once thereâitâs a bit sharper now, and colorful.â
