JSO investigators said the crash happened around 4:15 a.m. Sunday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man is dead after investigators say he crashed into a utility pole early Sunday morning.

Officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to the 4500 block of Brentwood Avenue around 4:15 a.m. Sunday after reports of a crash.

They discovered a lone vehicle that had collided with a utility pole. The driver, a man in his 30s, was the sole occupant of the car and was promptly taken to the hospital.

According to investigators, the man was heading south on Brentwood when he veered into oncoming traffic and then crashed into a concrete JEA utility pole at the intersection of Brentwood and Alder Street. Police reported that the driver was thrown from the car.

He did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

JSO Traffic Homicide Sergeant Hungerford says speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash.

“We’re still assessing what caused him to cross into oncoming traffic and subsequently hit the pole,” stated Sgt. Hungerford. “He was ejected and appeared to be traveling at high speed,” added Sgt. Hungerford.

Police had Brentwood and Alder closed for the investigation.
