TBI: 1 dead after officer-involved shooting in Sullivan County

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Sullivan County on Sunday.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) reported in a news release that a shooting involving an officer occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on Highway 394 close to Highway 11 West.

A Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) trooper was reportedly responding to a crash in the area.

The TBI stated, “When the trooper approached the driver involved in the crash, suspecting the individual was intoxicated, he tried to make an arrest. For reasons that are still being looked into, the individual ran away, leading to an escalation of the situation.”

The subject allegedly produced a gun and the trooper fired and killed him, according to the TBI.

No other injuries were reported.
